An opportunity to join the Trustee Board of a dynamic community business in Crystal Palace
The Upper Norwood Library Trust: Treasurer
(Voluntary Position)
We are looking for an enthusiastic person with relevant financial qualifications and / or accountancy experience, to join our trailblazing Trust as our new Treasurer.
The Upper Norwood Library Trust (UNLT) was formed in November 2012 by local residents to take over the operation, governance and management of the Upper Norwood Joint Library. We are now a thriving social enterprise with charitable objectives to support the social, cultural and economic well-being of the Upper Norwood local community and beyond. We deliver primarily through the Upper Norwood Library Hub in Crystal Palace.
The Library Hub has professional staff employed by the Trust who run the building, develop services and raise revenue. The building hosts a library service delivered to the Trust by Lambeth Council Library Services, co-funded by Croydon Library Services. The focus for the Trust over the next few years is to be fully sustainable through a blend of statutory funding, grants and by generating our own income, both at the Library Hub and in the wider community.
We are now looking for new trustee to join us in the role of Treasurer. We are looking for somebody with relevant financial qualifications or accountancy experience (it is not necessary to be a qualified accountant) who can help oversee the sound financial management of the organisation, and ensure all legal financial requirements are met. We are keen to speak to people from a range of backgrounds, be that of working in social enterprises or charities, in established businesses or start-ups, or the public sector. From whichever professional background you come, you will have financial management experience along with a pragmatic approach to organisational and business development – and an entrepreneurial streak. Critically, we are looking for someone with a commitment to support a valued community enterprise, and to the charitable objectives of UNLT.
Our trustees are responsible for governance of the charity, setting its strategic direction and ensuring all legal and statutory requirements are met. As Treasurer you will also chair the Finance Committee, which meets quarterly. Trustees generally commit around 6-10 hours per month to UNLT activities, although this is by agreement and dependent upon business need). This includes quarterly trustee meetings, sub-Committee meetings, an annual away day and ad-hoc advisory activities. You will be expected to attend profile raising public/community events.
Becoming a UNLT trustee is an opportunity to meet other friendly and like-minded trustees, utilise your skills and experience to have a direct impact on our community and users and learn and adopt new skills along the way.
