Unlocking community decision-making on technology futures
Unlocking community decision-making on technology futures
Led by Dr Pericle Salvini, and funded by the Minderoo programme, this project is launching a community lab to develop community decision-making processes about Artificial Intelligence (AI). The community lab will be based at the Upper Norwood Library Hub (UNLH) in South London. The community lab will host five sessions in the year, each focused on one facet of AI, led by experts from Oxford University (from the Departments of Engineering and Computer Science) and ORBIT-RRI Ltd. There will be an associated volunteer programme, where a small number of community members will be appointed as ‘technology futures stewards’. Stewards will attend every session, and host one session where they will collaborate with the experts to help them design the session, facilitate discussions, and coordinate follow-up actions. The sessions will help community members to learn about a technology, explore its potential impact locally and in the world, and brainstorm actions to influence the development and governance of that technology towards the public’s best interest. The design and learning from the lab will be published openly in a case study so other libraries can use them to implement their own labs.
